How To Edit Your Closet And Not Lose Your Cool

It’s difficult to part with our personal belongings. It could be a purse, dress, handbag or scarf. But often, we may hold on to personal items that no longer reflect who we are today. Our closets are full and we have fun out of storage solutions or space. If you are lucky to find extra storage in your home, that’s fantastic. Most of us don’t have that luxury of extra storage space. Storage solutions become so important and finding more space is a must. Now might be a good time to start fresh and edit your closet and embrace the notion of minimalism or less is more.

Take stock of what you have

As challenging as it may be, take inventory of what you have in your closets and drawers. Identify the clothes, shoes and handbags you use frequently or daily, and those you haven’t used in a long time. Make two piles. Put back the clothes, shoes and accessories you use frequently. Take a closer look at the items you haven’t used in a long time. Finding a storage solution is one option. Although a difficult task, the other option is to edit your closet.

Donate or giveaway gentley used items

Thrift made a comeback in Canada about a decade ago. It’s booming. My Sister’s Closet in Vancouver is a fabulous consignment shop to extend the life of your gently used clothes while helping you to make money at the same time.  H&M, a major retailer, have a recycle program for clothes.  They are leaders in sustainability. They welcome all textiles, from all brands in any condition. The items you drop off will either be reworn, reused or recycled.  Simply drop off your bag of unwanted clothes and they will reward you with a coupon for their store. You can also drop off gently used clothes at Thrift stores or the Salvation Army who have over 300 stores across our country.

Be more intentional when you shop

Once you’ve edit your closet and found some extra space, you may want to become more intentional in what you buy. We live in a throw-away culture where cheap goods are readily available and many end up in landfills. Buy quality clothes to minimize closet clutter. Not only will the items last longer, but classic clothes never go out of style. They may be a more expensive, but you won’t have to replace them for a long time. You can update your wardrobe at any time with a trendy scarf or new pair of shoes. The good news is you won’t break the bank, and will be doing your part in keeping our landfills empty and contributing to sustainability.  Less is always more.

Invest in good storage solutions

If you can’t part with your treasured belongs, then you must invest in good storage solutions for your clothes. The choice is endless. But the easiest way is to store off-season clothes in storage boxes under your bed or where you have space. Consider stackable bins so you can see what you are storing.  And if you just don’t have any more storage space in your cupboard think outside the box. Or you could be bold and display and store your belongings in open spaces.
